Brad knew what Mum was up to. Once he and Liv were outside, Bob was out of sight, strolling down the side of the house. His dad had the back passenger door open to Mum’s car – he went in head first and pulled his cast in after him. Liv got into the front passenger side with her activity-filled rucksack and belted up. Dad leaned in before she closed the door.

‘Listen, you two. Have a good time, and don’t let this stuff with me and your mum worry you. Once I get to the end of this game we’ll all be friends again, and I’ll have loads of time – and money – to spend on my two favourite people!’

‘Are you going to be rich, Dad?’

‘That’s the plan, Livvy-Lou! I’m going to go before she comes back out – I don’t want another mauling. Tell her to drive safe.’ He gave Liv a kiss and offered Brad another thumbs up. Brad returned it, more out of habit than anything.

He thinks he’s going to finish the game. Brad had read the forum. Had heard how tough people found the later levels; the sheer number of Helms, and their… characteristics, for want of a better word. It sounded like there were some real horrors built into it. Whereas I just keep getting attacked by old ladies.

No one on the forum claimed to have completed it, and those who felt they were getting close to the end, well, they often didn’t post again.

He watched Dad pull away in his VW Polo, and wasn’t at all convinced by his promises.

Mum came out of the front door and locked up. She got into the car. ‘He didn’t hang around then?’

‘He said you should drive safe,’ said Liv.

‘Absolutely. You got my directions in there, sweetpea?’

Liv patted her bag. ‘All set.’

‘Right then, let’s get going.’ Mum started the engine.

Brad looked out of the rear window. Bob was just coming back around the side of the house. He headed straight for the car, but they pulled away before he could reach it. He kept walking all the same.

Brad readjusted so he could look forward. They left the close and got onto the main road. His eye just happened to be lingering on the pavement when he saw her. The nun. Walking in the direction of the house.

‘Did you see-?’ he asked, but cut himself off. He waited for either one of them in the front to question, but neither did. Liv was too preoccupied with finding a CD for the stereo, and Mum only had eyes for the road.

She had been heading to the house. Still heading towards the house, even after Dad had left.

Brad looked out of the back, just before a turn took them out of sight.

Now she had changed course. She was walking away from the house. Following their route.
